The Importance of a Breast Self-Exam

A breast self-exam is a way to find early signs of breast cancer. It can help you know the way your breasts normally look and feel. If you notice any changes like lumps, pain, moles, or discharge, see your doctor. The American Cancer Society recommends women have mammograms once a year starting at age 45. A mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast to find breast cancer early. People of all ages should examine their breasts at least once a month.

How can you do a breast self-exam?

  1. In the shower.

Using the tips of your fingers, press down on your skin. Start from the outside and move to the center in a circle motion, moving over the entire breast and armpit area. Feel for any lumps or areas that feel hard.

  1. In front of a mirror.

Look at your breasts. Look for changes in the shape of your breasts. Look for changes on the skin and nipples. Look for spots where the skin goes inwards, new moles, or changes in color. Do this in three poses: (1) with your arms at your sides, (2) with your arms over your head, and (3) in the “superhero” pose. For the “superhero” pose, put your palms on your hips and flex your chest muscles.

  1. Lying down.

Put a pillow under your right shoulder. Put your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, press the tips of your fingers onto your right breast. Use small circular motions. Move over your entire breast and right armpit. Use light, medium and firm pressure. Squeeze the nipple and look for any changes to your skin. Repeat these steps on your left side.

Doing a self-breast exam every month can help you tell if anything is different from before. You know your body the best. If you feel or see anything new or different, tell your doctor.
