What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a molecule that your body needs to make stronger bones. Vitamin D also prevents you from getting sick.

How is Vitamin D made?

Vitamin D is made naturally with the help of sunlight. You can also get Vitamin D from the food you eat.

Vitamin D deficiency?

Vitamin D deficiency means your body is not getting enough vitamin D. Most adults and children in the United States have vitamin D deficiency. Getting enough vitamin D is important for children to build strong bones.

Vitamin D for Children?

During pregnancy getting enough vitamin D is important. After birth all children need vitamin D. If your child is 12 months or older plain whole cow’s milk is a good source for vitamin D. For babies younger than 12 months, cow’s milk is not recommended. Breastfeeding also does not have all the vitamin D a baby needs. Consult your doctor for further information. How to get Vitamin D?

1. Sun:

Some experts recommend 5 to 30 minutes of being under the sun between 10am to 4pm. You can do this daily or at least twice a week to either face, arms, hands, or legs without sunscreen.

This is a list of common foods with high vitamin D: Trout Fish, Salmon, Milk (vitamin D fortified), Cereal (vitamin D fortified), Eggs (yolk). These days many cereals and milks and other foods are vitamin D fortified. This means that extra vitamin D was added. You can find out the amount of Vitamin D by looking at the food labels.

How to read Vitamin D on food labels?

You can use the percentage of Vitamin D on food labels to understand how much vitamin D you are getting per serving size. Following are some examples:


1 cup of dry Cheerios has 10 percent of your daily need for Vitamin D.




1 cup of Fairlife Whole Milk with added Vitamin D has 25 percent of your daily need for Vitamin D.
